What is Flame-Resistant Apparel?
This type of clothing uses flame-resistant chemicals on the fabric blends, which are designed to self-extinguish within seconds after the ignition source is removed. This limits the degree of burn and body-burn percentage. Please keep in mind that flame resistant apparel is not flame proof.
3 Main Safety Standards
NFPA 70E: This standard mandates that employers conduct a hazard risk assessment to determine the potential arc exposure (ATPV) for employees who work on or near energized parts or equipment. Employees are required to wear flame-resistant (FR) apparel with an ATPV or cal rating, equal to or greater than the determined arc hazard. This standard is designed to be used in general industry.
NFPA 2112: The standard mandates that employers conduct a flash-fire hazard assessment to determine the risk of a flash fire. Employees are required to wear flame-resistant (FR) apparel if the potential for a flash fire exists. This standard is designed to be used in the oil and petrochemical industries.
NESC: Similar to the NFPA 70E standard, it specifies that employers conduct a hazard risk assessment to determine the potential arc exposure for employees who work on or near energized parts or equipment. Employees are required to wear flame-resistant (FR) apparel with an ATPV or cal rating, equal to or greater than the determined arc hazard. This standard is designed to be used in the electric utilities industry.
